The Footpath at Birmingham Hill

Birmingham Township residents are familiar with a recent major national historic preservation achievement, the Brandywine Conservancy’s acquisition of a farm centrally located on the battlefield of a major United States Revolutionary War conflict, the Battle of the Brandywine. Residents may not be familiar with an important aspect of the battlefield preservation; in association with the Chester County government, the Brandywine Conservancy will be providing public access to Birmingham Hill. The access will be provided through a footpath that follows a significant portion of the perimeter of the Brandywine Conservancy property and will be joined with a comparably sized western segment along Meetinghouse Road that is being provided by the Worth Family Trust.

Funding and support for the Footpath at Birmingham Hill has been provided in part by a grant from the Chester County Municipal Grant program, The Brandywine Conservancy, The Worth Family Trust and the municipality, Birmingham Township. The footpath will be a minimally maintained, low-impact 6-15’ grass and woodlands corridor along a newly constructed split rail fence line. Opening ceremonies are tentatively planned for early Spring 2009. Residents are encouraged to refrain from walking on the two private properties until the footpath is formally opened to the public.

The footpath project is being implemented and managed by the Recreation Parks and Open Space Committee on behalf of Birmingham Township. Any questions can be directed to Birmingham Township (birminghamtwp@comcast.net) or interested residents may attend the Board of Supervisors meeting on the first and third Monday of each month @ 7:30 PM or the monthly RPOS meeting on the third Wednesday of each month at 7 PM at the township building located at 1040 West Street Road.
